These two terms are usually expressed as one but are actually two separate medical conditions.
Wernicke is an encephalopathy that results (mainly in alcoholics) from vitamin B1 deficiency. Classic signs include:
- Cranial Nerve VI nerve palsy
- Gait Ataxia (inability to stand)
- Memory Loss
Korsakoff is also seen in alcoholics. Signs include:
- Retrograde Amnesia
