A continuous inflammation of the colon (Large intestine). It may involve the rectum. There is no clear reason for its development.
Symptoms include intermittent abdominal pain. Flare ups are common.
Signs include bloody diarrhea (unlike Chron’s which has no bloody stool)
May result in a serious complication called Toxic Megacolon
Persons with Ulcerative Colitis have an increased risk for colon cancer.
Interesting, Ulcerative Colitis patients may have non abdominal manifestations such as:
- Oral lesions
- Erythema Nodosum
- Ankylosis Spondylitis
