This a walled-off collection of pus at the back of the throat. Characteristically, patients complain of sore throat, difficulty speaking, difficulty swallowing and a muffled voice (“hot potato” voice).
Upon exam, the soft palate of the throat is enlarged and the uvula is deviated AWAY from the location of the abscess.
Treatment may include a needle aspiration with the assistance of an intra-oral ultrasound. Another method to extract the pus is an incision with a scalpel.
