Otitis media is a middle ear infection affecting the area behind the tympanic membrane (ear drum). Typical symptoms include ear pain, hearing loss and fever. Treatment may include oral antibiotics such as Amoxicillin or Azithromycin (Zithromax). Ear drops to the outer ear are not curative of an otitis media ear infection. Complications of untreated otitis media include ear drum perforation, eustachian tube congestion, mastoiditis, and/or conductive hearing loss.
